기기가 네트워크에 붙을 때 IP 주소·마스크·기본 게이트웨이·DNS 를 자동으로 받아 오는 프로토콜. 아직 IP 가 없는 상태에서 LAN 브로드캐스트로 시작한다.

IP 주소의 앞부분이 같은 주소들의 묶음. 마스크(/24)로 어디까지가 네트워크인지 정하고, 같은 서브넷이면 직접, 아니면 게이트웨이로 보낸다.
